Karlie Kloss Couldn't Help It: Taylor Swift's Squad Actually Contains a Lot of Kim Kardashian Fans

From Lena Dunham to Jaime King to, well, Kendall Jenner obviously—a lot of T.Swift's nearest and dearest have had nothing but respect for Kim

There's another reason why most of Taylor Swift's squad stayed silent in the heat of the moment last month, right after Kim Kardashian flashily presented the proof that Taylor and Kanye West had chatted about at least one of the mentions of her in his song "Famous" before she slammed the lyrics later on.

A reason other than that they wanted to be nowhere near that perfect storm of drama, which was sucking in everything in its vicinity like the #BermudaTriangle.

And that would be the controversy-repelling fact that most of the people who've come under the umbrella of Taylor's squad over the past few years...well, they just really like Kim!

Karlie Kloss, who is perhaps one of Taylor's nearest and dearest friends, accidentally made headlines today after she dared admit to the U.K.'s Sunday Times Style that, as far as she remembered, Kim had always "been a lovely person" to her in the past. "Look, I really don't know her that well," the supermodel added, perhaps taking a stab at second-guessing herself so as not to seem as if she was passing actual judgment. She then took to Twitter to insist she would always have Taylor's back.

But the truth was already out there.

While Karlie was perfectly valid in slamming those who suggested she was somehow siding against her best friend by calling Kim a "lovely person," she can't help it that she, like so many others, didn't have any personal issues with Kim to call upon in defense of Taylor.

Because the celebrity world is many times tinier than the already small real world, so many of the people who populate our Instagram feeds are all in it together. They aren't necessarily BFFs, or squads—or even acquaintances in some cases! But at some point in time they've been asked their opinion on a fellow star, or posed for a pic, or shared a photo of themselves watching an actor's movie, or attending a singer's concert, or buying a reality star's book...

"selfie with selfish #yeahiboughtit (I support experiments in female identity exploration/am a student of pop culture/will not be shamed)," Lena Dunham—one of the pals who starred in Taylor's "Bad Blood" video—snapped herself with a copy of Kim's Selfish last year. The Girls start and creator raised a few eyebrows at the time, her support of Kim's vanity project not seemingly in line with her role as public feminist No. 1—but as Lena said, she supports other women and their varying forms of self-expression.

Now this is not to say that some of Taylor's friends' opinions about Kim couldn't have changed over the years, as a result of Kim's Snapshot bombshell or not. (Lena didn't appreciate the naked fake-Taylor in Kanye's "Famous" video, which was released in June, but she never said anything about the phone call.)

But it's still kinda funny to see how many of the squad members whose opinions the Internet waited for with baited breath in the aftermath have had perfectly "lovely" interactions with Kim and her family in the past:

Jaime King: The mother of Taylor's godson once wept with sympathy for Kim after her debut Met Gala appearance in head-to-toe florals was treated roughly by...who else, Twitter. "I couldn't stop crying because here was this beautiful glowing pregnant woman who is probably so excited to be attending the Met ball for the first time with the man that she loved, and she had this beautiful dress made for her that was very daring and very gorgeous, and she has a beautiful growing child inside of her, and yet everybody bashed her..." King recalled to Elle. The model and actress would later socialize with Kim and just this past December, Kim raved that Jaime's gift for then-newborn Saint West—the Simone LeBlanc "New Mom & Baby Box" gift set—was just "the BEST."

Lorde: The New Zealand-born singer threw some virtual-virtual prayer hands Kim's way after she posed naked for Paper magazine back in 2014--and since her comment was misconstrued as a slam, she was given the opportunity to clarify.

She explained on Tumblr: "i retweeted kim's amazing cover and wrote 'MOM', which among the youthz is a compliment; it basically jokingly means 'adopt me/be my second mom/i think of you as a mother figure you are so epic' (obviously i love my own mama and she is the best tho) but straight after that i think someone else called out the cover saying kim has no right to look that sexy as she is a mother which is TOTAL trash - why should that stop her? if anything i think she gets even more beautiful and sexy all the time like a fineass wine, and of course has every right to showcase that - but i think our two comments got lumped in and also maybe reporters don't understand my breed of humour/worship."

Moreover, Lorde added, "kim's cover was pure heaven. so so beautiful."

So there you go. Like Lena, praising a most signature Kim move.

Ellie Goulding: She too stuck up for Kim's right to take pride in her bod after the reality star made waves earlier this year with a throwback naked selfie. "Honestly, it did not phase me," Ellie told Flare this past spring. "I feel like I have the right to do the same thing if I ever wanted to. She's a mom; she's had kids; she looks incredible. She works hard for her body, and it's beautiful."

Kendall Jenner: Well, duh, Kendall is Kim's sister.

Gigi Hadid: Speaking of sisters, while many models who've crossed the Kardashian-Swift divide have certainly socialized with Kim, we're going to project that Gigi has a special place in her heart for the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star. And that's because Kim adores Gigi's little sis, Bella Hadid, as well. "Bella resonates with a young cool, fresh vibe," Kim blogged about the It Girl last fall in a #WCW post. "She is always the sweetest when I see her. And I love that she and Gigi are a sister duo!"

How do you take a stance against that?!

Hailee Steinfeld: The singer-actress stuck up for the whole family after Rebel Wilson, who had accused the Kardashians of waging a smear campaign against her, refused to present a MTV Video Music Award alongside Kendall and Kylie Jenner because, she said, the sisters were "totally against" what she stood for (i.e. a more traditional route to fame).

Hailee told The Fix when asked about her Pitch Perfect 2 co-star's comments, "I support any decision anyone makes—we all work very hard, we do a lot to maintain all of that. I think everyone's entitled to their own opinion. I've been in the same circle as Kylie and Kendall for years and they are very sweet girls."

Respect, you know?

This isn't to say that Karlie & Co. have been cheering Kanye's antics throughout—in addition to Lena's video concerns, Karlie and Gigi also took issue with those "Famous" lyrics.

But Kim can't help it that she's cut such a clean swathe through the celeb universe, charming the people she's met and prompting support from so many others. The fewer people with any inclination to "take sides," the better.
