HBOHBO is reversing course on Vinyl and has canceled the period drama months after announcing its renewal, E! News has confirmed.
"After careful consideration, we have decided not to proceed with a second season of Vinyl," HBO said in a statement. "Obviously, this was not an easy decision. We have enormous respect for the creative team and cast for their hard work and passion on this project.
Olivia Wilde took to Twitter to write, "Thanks for all the kind words about Vinyl, my friends. We had a BLAST, and made something special. Party on."
Vinyl hailed from Terrence Winter, who was not going to return for season two, Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese and starred Bobby Cannavale, Ray Romano and Wilde. In the 1970s-set drama, Cannavale played a record executive who was trying to save his company.
HBO renewed the drama after its first episode aired in February. The two-hour series premiere averaged 760,000 viewers without DVR playback factored in. Vinyl's cancellation also comes after a shift in leadership at HBO. Casey Bloys has taken over for Michael Lombardo as president of programming.
This isn't the first time HBO has changed its mind on shows. The cable network previously announced plans for both The Brink and Luck to return for second seasons before abandoning them. HBO also brought Lisa Kudrow's The Comeback back for a second season nearly 10 years after canceling it following its first and only season. Larry David's Curb Your Enthusiasm is returning for a ninth season, the first new batch of episodes since 2011.
