If it weren't for people like Joan Rivers, a movie like Bridesmaids may never have been made.
Kristen Wiig hit box office gold with the raunchy female-driven comedy.
I caught up with Wiig earlier today at the Toronto Film Festival and asked her what she'll remember most about Rivers, who died yesterday at the age of 81.
"She definitely was someone who was outspoken and paved the way," Wiig said at the TIFF premiere of her movie, Welcome to Me. "I think people really appreciated how fearless she was. I mean, I did!"
Also on the red carpet today was Will Ferrell, Wiig's fellow Saturday Night Live alum and a producer of Welcome to Me.
"I remember watching Joan on The Tonight Show as a kid," Ferrell said. "We forget when the Tonight Show was the only outlet for comedians. This audacious woman who kind of looked like someone you'd work with in an office would just say all these outrageous things. We forget there were very few women in comedy when she started out and she just blazed this trail that's opened the door for it to be OK for women to be outrageous and strong and have an opinion."
