As it turns out, the actor and the director zeroed in on the idea of collaborating on what would eventually become James Bond's latest outing, Skyfall, at Jackman's 41st birthday party in Manhattan three years ago.
Per the New York Daily News, the two got to chatting at the bash when the subject of 007 came up.
"I was sitting with him and I said, 'How are you doing? When's the next Bond movie?' Mendes recalls asking Craig. "He said, 'I don't know—why don't you do it? And I just thought, 'Yeah.' It was a weird thing. I had a kind of a feeling in the pit of my stomach."
And that eventually got the ball rolling. "I honestly believe if I hadn't gone to the party, I wouldn't be sitting here," Mendes insists.
Chalk it up to another Hugh Jackman–James Bond connection: After all, the Aussie actor reportedly turned down the role of 007. See, everything eventually works out.
