Leave it all to Jerry Trainor to applaud Jennette McCurdy for sharing her story.
Jennette's 2022 memoir, I'm Glad My Mom Died, gave fans a raw glimpse into the behind-the-scenes struggles she faced while filming the original run of iCarly, including an eating disorder and the alleged abuse she endured from her mother Debra McCurdy, who passed away from cancer in 2013.
"I read it immediately," he said in an exclusive interview with E! News' Francesca Amiker. "It's heartbreaking, but it's also brilliant and funny. I felt a lot of pride for her being able to speak her truth."
The 46-year-old—who starred appeared alongside Jennette on the Nickelodeon show from 2007 to 2012, and is reprising his role as Spencer Shay in the third season of the Paramount+ revival—has since been in touch with the now-retired actress.
"She's very strong and very perceptive, and you can see it in the writing how smart she is," Jerry shared. "It's stuff she's going to deal with for her whole life, but she's amazing. She's using it, and she's growing stronger because of it."
Jennette is the only member from iCarly's original cast who chose to not return for its revival when it premiered in 2021. At the time, the Sam & Cat alum said she had walked away from her acting career several years prior, adding that she "initially didn't want to do it" in the first place.
However, since the release of her memoir, Jennette has teased the idea of making a comeback. As she told E! News in October, "I do feel like only through writing the book have I gotten to a place where I think there might be a way of exploring acting that doesn't carry that baggage that I carried with me for so long."
"Maybe if I write something for myself," the 30-year-old added. "I think that'd really be maybe one of the only ways I could kind of try exploring it again."
