Okay, everyone safe? Can we talk about those final moments—you know, the ones where Danny Castellano (Chris Messina) finally decided to man up and propose to Mindy (Mindy Kaling)? That's right, Danny liked it and he totally put a ring on it. Unfortunately, that ring might not fit.
"The first problem she has is she's always wanted to have the big rock on her finger, but what happens is she's pregnant so it only fits on her pinkie," executive producer Matt Warburton explains of Mindy's big dilemma as an engaged mom-to-be. "I think what's happening for the character is we're giving her what she wanted at a time when it's not ideal, and so she wants to be the most annoying fiancée in the world, but she has so much other stuff going on it's almost spoiled for her sometimes."
Kaling tells us, "She's definitely not someone who ever achieves her goals and does it gracefully. I think she's the kind of person who when she gets engaged or does anything she wants to rub it in everybody's face. We get to see her have some fun with that and gloat a little bit."
But although Mindy Lahiri totally would be that girl who constantly posts Instagrams that coincidentally feature her left-hand jewelry very prominently, she has some more pressing issues to worry about. Like, say, the fact that she's about to have a baby.
So while we might get to see Mindy walk down the aisle soon, she's a little more likely to be nursing her newborn first. Costume designer extraordinaire Salvador Perez told us recently during a chat on The Mindy Project set that he's had a couple of conversations about what Mindy's wedding dress would look like, there's nothing concrete planned so far.
"It certainly is something that she would want," Kaling confirms. "I can't really say much more than that other than it's probably something that she's designed in her head a million times. Sal would KILL a Mindy Lahiri wedding dress. There's obviously so much comedy in weddings, as we've seen in the movie Bridesmaids and everything, so I love that area. We've thought about it, but I can't really say much more."
Adds Warburton, "I think the timing of the wedding in the future is going to be yet another big bone of contention between these two people. Because as with everything else, it's always an argument with Danny and he always has to get dragged to do anything, and so Mindy will find that her struggles are not over."
