Now we know where Michael Douglas spent his birthday without estranged wife Catherine Zeta-Jones.

The Oscar winner was snapped Wednesday ringing in his 69th year in New Mexico where he was working on the set of his forthcoming thriller, The Reach.

And based on the fact Douglas was still wearing his wedding ring, we can only assume his birthday wish was to patch things up with the brunette beauty following the pair's shock announcement last month that they had separated after 13 years of marriage.

Yesterday evening after finishing up shooting for the day, the actor and an unidentified pal were also snapped leaving the Outback Steakhouse, where we presume he had a hearty birthday meal despite Catherine being out of reach halfway across the globe.

Zeta-Jones, as it happened, turned 44 on the same day, but was reportedly celebrating her B-day in China, where she turned up to help launch a new $5 billion fllm studio.

At the time of their split, Catherine's rep said the duo were "taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage."

That hasn't stopped Michael from hoping for the best. Douglas was spotted wearing his wedding band when he walked the red carpet for last Sunday's Emmy Awards sans Zeta-Jones and also thanked his missus "for her support" after winning an Emmy for playing Liberace in the HBO biopic Behind the Candelabra.
