Hear any news about Tom Cruise lately? Anything?

After 30 years in the biz, there's a reason why the Rock of Ages star still rocks: because the guy knows how to weather those rough patches.

The megastar, who turns 50 today, got a major damper put on his big day when wife Katie Holmes announced Friday that they were calling it quits after five years of marriage.

The painful personal news comes on the heels of a tough professional blow that's enough to test the star's famous mettle...

Two weeks ago, Cruise's highly touted big-screen version of the Broadway hit Rock of Ages opened to a disappointing $15.1 million and has drummed up a measly $35 million so far.

Throw in what many observers say could become a nasty custody battle with Holmes over their 6-year-old daughter Suri and you can't blame Cruise for not being in a celebratory mood on his big day.

But if there's one thing Cruise has taught us, it's that you should never count out this sturdy superstar.

During a career that has spanned more than 30 years and some three-dozen films, Cruise has cornered the market on staging comebacks, enduring everything from box-office bombs (Lions for Lambs, anyone?) to PR debacles (couch-jumping! Psychiatry takedowns! Matt Lauer slugfests!).

The proof is in the pudding: To date, the star's films have collectively grossed a staggering $7.6 billion worldwide.

And he's showing no signs of slowing down: He'll next be seen in the crime thriller Jack Reacher, and is currently shooting the buzzy sci-fi epic Oblivion in Iceland.

So, at the end of the day, all that's left to say is this: Happy birthday, Mr. Top Gun—we've got no doubt you'll be flying high again very soon!
