Brad Pitt is trying to get over his split from Angelina Jolie, but their six children remain his No. 1 priority.

"He has been very upset," a source tells E! News. "It's a difficult situation for everyone."

Despite the headline-making drama that has surrounded the estranged couple over the past week, people close to Brad and Angelina are hoping that they'll "be able to settle on something soon."

The insider adds, "Things have been quieting down."

When news first broke that the couple would be calling it quits after 12 years together, rumors surfaced that their different parenting styles were to blame. Even though both Angelina and Brad gushed about each other as parents throughout the years, it appeared that these two approached handling their children in different ways.

But the source tells E! News that Brad wanted nothing but a stable environment for Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne.

"Brad was committed to giving them stability. When she would travel, which was a lot, he would stay with them," the insider says. "Any time he wasn't working, he was with the kids."

The Inglourious Basterds star still hasn't seen his children since Angelina filed for divorce. (Jolie has requested for full custody of their kids).

Last Thursday, the Department of Children and Family Services in Los Angeles County began conducting an inquiry into allegations that Pitt was involved in an incident with a child aboard a private plane flying from Europe to L.A.

Reps for the actors have not commented on the reports regarding the incident on the plane, but a source close to the investigation told E! News he "takes the matter very seriously and says he did not commit any abuse of his children."

Reports have said that Pitt took a drug test shortly after the incident, but E! News has learned that DCFS can't require anyone to take a drug test. "Any drug testing would have to be voluntary," a separate source shares.

With so much speculation surrounding Brad and Angelina's split, some have wondered how the beloved couple fell apart. Instead of splitting amicably, these two have taken an ugly turn. "[Angelina] has tried to make herself the victim and it hasn't worked," our source says.

Angelina's legal rep, however, disputes this report.
