It's Carisi like you've never seen him before: hair disheveled, without a smart suit and looking very down and out. In the below exclusive sneak peek of Law & Order: SVU, Peter Scanavino's character is looking worse for the wear. What's he doing? Why is he saying his name is Dominic Smith and he was caught with child porn? Things aren't exactly what they seem.

In "Sheltered Outcasts," Carisi goes undercover at a homeless shelter after a rash of rapes in the area. He's hoping to determine whether or not one of the sex offender residents are involved. Carisi goes in deep in the episode directed by Mariska Hargitay. This is the fourth episode Hargitay, who is also a producer on the series, has stepped behind the camera to helm as director.

The guest cast in the episode includes Michael Rapaport, Scott Grimes and Kevin Tighe. Yes, that's Gregory Searle from the season nine episode "Avatar." He's out of prison. Why? Tune in to find out.

Law & Order: SVU airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on NBC.

(E! and NBC are both part of the NBCUniversal family.)
