'Just keep swimming?' More like 'just keep waiting.'

Finally, after 13 years, Finding Nemo (2003) is getting its much-anticipated second installment, Finding Dory.

The trailer for the new Disney-Pixar animated film is now here, and it's adorable.

Ellen DeGeneres and Albert Brooks are lending their voices, once again, to the sequel.

There are a lot of reasons why big movie sequels can take a long time to happen: negotiating, busy stars, waiting for the perfect script.

Perhaps the first film was a cult success that needed time to get popular. Sometimes it just feels like the right moment has come to follow the story and see where the characters we know and love are now.

In honor of Finding Dory, which hits theaters June 17, 2016, we're looking back at more movie follow-ups that took a decade or more to hit theaters.

And, no, we're not counting reboots. These are the franchises that brought back the big stars that we wanted to see again.

Disney/Pixar

The first Toy Story film was released in 1995 and recently celebrated its 20th anniversary late last year.

It's a franchise that keeps going, just like Woody and Buzz's friendship.

A series that stars the voice work of some super-busy and in-demand celebs, the break between Toy Story 2 (1999) and Toy Story 3 (2010) was pretty long... 11 years, but certainly worth the wait.

With the original out in '99, and the fourth installment slated for a 2018 release, that's 23 years to tell four toy stories.

That means some children who enjoyed the first movie in theaters will be taking their kids to see the follow-up.

Disney

Another kids movie that probably had some of its audience grow up between films?

Monsters, Inc. (2001) led to a prequel 12 years later, Monsters University (2013).

Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) and Sulley (John Goodman) came back to show us how the two monsters became best buddies and learned to scare kids together.

If you were 7-years-old when the first flick came out, that means you were likely in college by the time Monsters University dropped. So a college follow-up seems appropriate.

Paramount Pictures

Ben Stiller stayed very busy, with the Night at the Museum series and other projects, during the 15 years between Zoolander (2001) and Zoolander 2 (2016).

Letting over a decade pass allowed time for the fashion landscape to change, plus it probably took awhile to land that long list of celeb cameos.

Twentieth Century Fox

There are also the sequels that mix old characters and new, most likely in the hopes of rebooting the franchise.

More than two decades after starring in Wall Street (1987), Michael Douglas returned to star in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (2010).

Wall street itself definitely changed over those 23 years, and the addition of Shia LaBeouf in the sequel was perhaps an attempt at a younger audience.

Lucasfilm/Paramount Pictures

That's not the only franchise follow-up to enlist LaBeouf as a potential new lead in the series.

There was a 19 year gap between Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008).

The fourth installment reunited Harrison Ford and Karen Allen, while introducing LaBeouf as their son.

Not counting the 2003 prequel with a different cast, the break between Dumb & Dumber (1994) and Dumb and Dumber To (2014) was two decades.

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels both enjoyed a ton of success in comedic and dramatic projects between the two films.

Seeing actors put on their old makeup, hair, and costumes so many years later makes for a fun trip down memory lane.

Twentieth Century Fox

When Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) hits theaters on June 24, it will be 20 years after Will Smith battled aliens in the original film, Independence Day (1996).

Though Smith isn't returning for the sequel, other stars like Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are back to save the world, once again.

Plus, they're bringing in Liam Hemsworth, so we can't complain.

Columbia Pictures

One sequel Will Smith did return for?

(We're not talking about Bad Boys 3, which Martin Lawrence said is happening.)

Men in Black (1997) was one of Smith's biggest blockbusters—it was released a year after Independence Day.

Though he's returned two more times (so far), there's no doubt the celeb's a busy guy.

There was a 10 year break between Men in Black II (2002) and Men in Black 3 (2012).

Smith's costar Tommy Lee Jones also returned for both sequels.
