Ah, sweater weather season at last!
Getting ready for fall this year will be as easy as having three staple fabrics—tweed, leather and velvet—on hand (and in closet). The best part about these textures is that they're all extremely versatile, meaning get ready to mix, layer and add surprising touches to your mainstay outfits as it gets even cooler outdoors. Tweed
Fall's most prominent knit is also its more versatile (better believe that the tweed we're seeing this season is not only for the office). From multihued midi skirts to crystal-embellished sweaters and dresses, these woven threads will keep you on trend and super warm. On our lust lists? A fringed skirt with pink and yellow flourishes from MSGM (ICYMI: Fringe is definitively in for fall and next spring), as well as an oversized Madewell coat in a not-so-moody gray hue.
Leather
Biker leather isn't the only incarnation of this texture getting its due this season: On the runway, we spotted colorful and patchwork pieces, while the leather on the red carpet is as experimental as it is chic (we're talking unique colors and trim overalls à la Emmy Rossum and Olivia Palermo). We're psyched to try a croc-effect midi (our dream pick is from Jason Wu), engine-red culottes (this faux leather pair from Zara should do the trick) and a rich camel-hued backpack from Rebecca Minkoff.
Velvet
A luxe, supple velvet will be your closet must as the weather gets colder: Just look at Julianne Moore, who stepped out in New York City on Sept. 28 for the premiere of her new film Freeheld in a stunning velvet Saint Laurent dress. This look can be pretty hot too (and we're not just talking about its warmth-giving powers), if Joan Smalls' ultra-sexy floral velvet Balmain mini has anything to say about it. Our eyes are on a pair of navy Topshop cigarette pants (which bring to mind one of the most drool-worthy pieces from Lauren Conrad's first runway collection), a textured Forever 21 topper and an A-line skirt from Christopher Kane.
