These days Hollywood seems to be overrun by celebs with sassy, shoulder-skimming bobs. At last night's Teen Choice Awards, we saw Sarah Hyland looking fresh as ever, rocking the flirty cut styled in tousled low-key waves, a deep side part and a micro-cornrow braid.
Ryan Richman, who styled Sarah's hair for the show, shared why the surprisingly easy-to-style cut (which is also favored by Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lawrence and Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting) is a very real option for anyone looking to change up their look for fall.
"The trend right now is shattered (uneven) textures that don't look too heavy," said Ryan. The bob cut works on any and all hair types, but shy away from blunt, straight-edge trims that make the look feel dated. The modern iteration is all about carefree styling, texture and volume, he added.
For Sarah's Teen Choice Awards look, Ryan went for something that didn't feel too done up. "One of my biggest pet peeves is seeing hair that is overly curled," said the stylist. To guarantee a natural wave that feels relaxed and easygoing, start with a voluminous blowout, adding in Paul Mitchell Extra-Body Sculpting Foam for flexibility and fullness before starting in on the wave.
To achieve the effortless S-like bends, take a curling wand or flat iron and, starting a few inches from the roots, wrap a section of hair around the wand. Then, taking the hair in the opposite direction, repeat this step a few inches below the first bend. Work your way down the hair—it doesn't have to be perfect! If you're going for something a bit more formal, focus your efforts on creating uniform waves and add in an extra element of surprise like Sarah's cornrow braid.
If a cornrow braid isn't in your wheelhouse, swap that out for something else small and subtle, "like a low ponytail, knots, twists or any type of braid that will instantly add texture to fall hair," said Ryan.
