If rocking a killer dress gives a woman killer confidence, just imagine what rocking a superhero costume can do.

Melissa Benoist, our new favorite superhero, got to experience that one-in-a-lifetime opportunity when she tried on her Supergirl costume and cape for the first time, and it couldn't have come at a better moment.

"I just had this injury so I had this eye patch on. It was kind of embarrassing," Benoist tells E! News about the very first time she tried on her costume, designed by Colleen Atwood for the new CBS series. "But the second I put it on, something shifts inside of me. It's kind of impossible not to feel strength and empowerment and positivity and hope. It really is pretty surreal."

Add that to seeing herself on the small screen after all the special effects have been added in to Supergirl and Benoist can't believe what she's already been able to do on the show, which will premiere in the fall.

"I don't recognize myself when I see those scenes," Benoist says. "It's kind of insane. The sheer scope of all of it, it's so epic that it's kind of mind-blowing to see it all put together."

And with so many other DC superhero shows on TV like Arrow and The Flash, is there a chance we could see some super-crossover event between them all?

"I hope so!" Benoist says.
