Hilary Duff didn't get a blue 'do because she's feeling blue.

The 27-year-old Younger actress, who filed for divorce from former hockey player Mike Comrie last month, revealed why she dyed her blond hair a blue-green shade on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Monday.

"Something is different about you, and I don't know what it is," Ellen DeGeneres joked.

"What could it be?" Duff said with a smirk.

What really inspired her makeover? "I've never done anything like this, and I was just in Cabo with my son and I was staring at the ocean and I was like, 'I want that on my head,'" she said. "So this happened."

Duff's 3-year-old son, Luca Comrie, isn't totally sold on the look. "Here's the thing: Luca is very particular about how he likes my hair. There are absolutely no buns on my head, no ponytails. I'll have a ponytail and he's like, 'Um, hair down, Mom. Hair down, please,'" the star said. "At least he knows what he likes."

"Now he likes to go through his roster of colors that he knows. He's like, 'Your hair's purple,' and I'm like, 'No, it's green,'" Duff added. "He's like, 'Nah.' I'm like, 'Yeah.' He's like, 'It's blue.' 'No.' 'It's purple.' 'No.'"

"He's very, very funny," the proud mom told DeGeneres.

Duff also revealed why she recently posted a sexy selfie on Instagram. "What was the impetus of that? You go, 'I look good and I'm going to make sure everyone see me looking good?'" DeGeneres asked her.

"I've never done anything like that before. My Instagram page is pretty tame. I had spent all weekend in a bikini and I was feeling pretty good. I'm just like everyone else. Usually I'm not feeling so good. I'm in a love/hate relationship with my body, and I was on a trip with my son, and it's been three years since I had him. I'm like, 'I'm just so proud of my body and what it's done for me.' It gave me the most beautiful little boy and I feel strong and powerful and I wanted to inspire other women," the TV Land actress said.

"Good for you," DeGeneres told her. "I mean, you have a kid. That's amazing."

The host then seized the opportunity to ask Duff about her new tattoo.

"We filmed [Younger] in Brooklyn, and it was so much fun being there. I love New York in the fall. I loved living in Brooklyn. Luca loved it. And I don't know if you know this, but I have quite a few tattoos. I have a bunch of little guys inside my arms," Duff said, showing a few off. "I have 12. This is my little Brooklyn."

The singer pointed out the rest of her body art before unveiling her "newest favorite tattoo."

"Should I just show it to you or should I explain?" she asked.

"Where is it? I mean, let's find that out before you..." DeGeneres said as Duff lifted her skirt.

"It's my biggest one. It's a big commitment—prime real estate. I just realized before I came that I've been on your show 12 times now. This is my twelfth time on your show, so I decided to show you a little love!" the actress said as she unveiled her temporary tribute to DeGeneres on her right thigh. "I love it!"
