Zooey Deschanel likes a bit of mystery.
The New Girl star appeared on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live! Thursday. Jimmy Kimmel joked about the TV star's baby bump, saying, "Either you're pregnant or you smuggled a cantaloupe out of the green room."
"I'm pregnant?" Zooey asked, pretending to be caught off guard. "No, I knew I was pregnant."
"Wouldn't that be something?" Jimmy asked. The engaged actress laughed and played along, saying, "I found out on the show! Everyone was like, 'You look pregnant!' and then I was like, 'Oh, my God! I am!'"
"That would top those TLC shows for sure" the comedian cracked.
Zooey also told Jimmy that she and fiancé Jacob Pechenik will not find out their baby's sex before she gives birth. "We are going to be surprised. It's more fun, you know? Make it into a game," she said.
Jimmy and his wife Molly McNearney took the same approach before Jane was born last summer.
Does Zooey have an idea whether she'll have a son or daughter? "I go back and forth," she said.
Zooey and Jacob get nervous that they'll accidentally find out the baby's sex, especially in ultrasound appointments. "The last time, the technician was like, 'Just so you know, I always use the pronoun he. That's my habit,'" she recalled. "She set it up because we were paranoid. We didn't want to find out."
According to Zooey, they're in the minority. "Most people want to find out," she said.
"I know," Jimmy told her. "That makes me feel like we're better than other people."
"I mean, we are!" Zooey joked, breaking into a fit of giggles.
Zooey's sister, Emily Deschanel, is also pregnant! The Bones star is a strict vegan, but Zooey isn't. "I eat some vegan meals, though," she said. "Sometimes you're hungry and you want food that's not vegan."
The She & Him singer looks forward to giving birth so she can resume her normal diet.
"You can't eat so many things when you're pregnant. You can't have sushi. You can't have cheese that tastes good. You can have a little bit [of coffee]. I would have like four cups a day, and now I can have half a cup, which is a total joke. A total joke!" she said. "You can't have alcohol. I miss that. I like wine."
"It keeps expanding. It feels like every week I find out something else I'm not supposed to eat," Zooey said. "I'm like, 'Oh, really? Sprouts? OK!' Which is on everything! People just put it on things willy-nilly."
Zooey said it's becoming "more and more difficult" to hide her pregnancy on New Girl. "We're still shooting and it's gotten kind of ridiculous," she said. "I've been carrying a lot of bags very awkwardly."
