Want to feel inspired? Meet Becky Hammon, the first woman to be on an NBA coaching staff and specifically to act as an assistant coach. She'll be working for the San Antonio Spurs alongside head coach Gregg Popovich. Hammon isn't the first woman to be hired by an NBA team, but she's the first one to hold a full-time assistant position.
Luckily, Hammon is already in with the team and they've all spent some quality bonding time while she was rehabbing a knee injury. Said head coach Popovich, "I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff. Having observed her working with our team this past season, I'm confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs."
If you're wondering "Why Hammon?" the answer is: Because she's a boss-ass bitch. She's spent the last eight seasons with the San Antonio Stars and is their all-time leader in assists and three-pointers. On top of that, she's ranked second in franchise history in terms of overall points and games. [Drops mic]
After the conclusion of the 2014 season, Hammon will retire from the WNBA and pick back up with basketball coaching for the Spurs. Maybe she can give a little feminine touch to the game and bring some more sensitivity and loving…We don't know. But whatever she brings to the table, it will be awesome, that's for sure.
Hopefully Hammon's hiring will encourage the NBA to hire other females full-time. It sure would be nice to see more than one.
