True Detective Creator Already Knows When the Series Might End...and It's Sooner Than You Think

#TrueDetectiveSeason3 might be the last True Detective hashtag meme. Creator Nic Pizzolatto said he probably only has enough in him for three years of his hit HBO drama.

"Every season, I'm essentially creating a brand new TV show," he said at the Banff World Media Festival, according to The Calgary Herald. "It can't have any growing pains like a regular first season. If it works it has to work right out of the box. That's incredibly exhausting. I mean, the job is exhausting to begin with, but it's doubly exhausting and I'm writing every episode. I can't imagine I would do this more than three years. I mean, I'd like to have a regular TV show. We'll have some fixed sets, regular actors and I could bring in people to help and I don' t have to be there every second. It'd be great."

Pizzolatto's True Detective took viewers and critics by storm. Fronted by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, the first season received rave reviews and is garnering a bevy of Emmy buzz. Rumors have swirled about the second season featuring female characters and Pizzolatto said that's partially true.

"There is a strong (lead) female character," he said. "But I wouldn't say it is female-led or anything like that."

And Jessica Chastain won't play that character. Rumors about her involvement in the new season surfaced and excited viewers like Chastain. "That news broke yesterday and it went crazy on the Internet," Chastain told press at Cannes. "There was so much of an explosion. Also it's an awkward thing because when all that attention happens, it takes away from whoever plays the role. I love Woody Harrelson, and I'm gonna watch the second season just like I watched every episode of the first. But I won't be on it."

Nobody has been cast for the second season, according to Pizzolatto. He said he's spoken to one person about it and has a wish list, but nothing has been set. "Literally, not a single rumor about casting that has been printed anywhere has any truth to it whatsoever," he said.

So far he's written two episodes about the season that he previously told Hitfix would be about "hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system."
