Bob Costas' hipster glasses are back.
You might remember the Harry Potter-esque frames from the 2012 Summer Olympics in London so it seems fitting that the veteran NBC sportscaster wore them again as he kicked off coverage for the 2014 Winter Olympics from Sochi on Thursday. But this time around, Costas provided an explanation for wearing the glasses as soon as he began anchoring the broadcast.
"Bear with me for a moment as I spare my friends in the press office countless inquiries," the 61-year-old said. "I have no choice to go all Peabody and Sherman on you for the next couple of nights since I woke up this morning with my left eye swollen shut and just about as red as the old Soviet flag."
Cue the split screens of Costas and the well-known cartoon characters.
He continued: "According to the NBC doctors here, it's some kind of minor infection which should resolve itself by the weekend. If only all my issues would resolve themselves that quickly, but that's another story."
So, that means his bout with pink eye will force him to wear these frames for the next few nights. And obviously his glasses and eye infection got the Internet buzzing.
