Who doesn't love having an amazing mani for a night out on the town? We prefer our nails in bright neons or rich metallics, which is sometimes hard to match makeup to without going overboard. Not to worry—professional makeup artist Mathias Alan offers tips for making your manicure complement your entire beauty look.

"Your look is not complete unless you tie it all together with your nails," Mathias said, while showing the model's fun summer nails—COVERGIRL's NEW Outlast Stay Brilliant Glosstini in Orange Oasis.

"Avoid trying to matchy-matchy your look up with your eyes, lips and cheeks," he said. "Try using a color that's a little bit more complimentary to the same tones and shades."

Because the model's nails are a punchy orange, Mathias uses a warm copper eyeshadow along her eyelids. He opts for a more muted look so that her nails and eye makeup don't compete.

"You want to keep the tones in the same hue or family," Mathias added, meaning, for example, that nails painted in shades of blue or green would pair better with eyeshadows in the plum family, while red and pink hues go well with warmer and lighter shades.

The resulting look is a subtle and natural, and doesn't over power the pop of color on your hands.

To complete the model's look, Mathias uses COVERGIRL'S New Lipslick Smoochies in Tweet Me, an iridescent coral shade that will make her lips to stand out: "If your nails are making a bold poppy statement, then opt for a more soft, natural finish," he said. "Your lips will always feel super soft, moisturized and will never feel greasy or sticky."

Now that your mani and makeup are totally complimentary, it's time to think about accessories.

"Add flair to your fingertips with rings to one or every finger, or [do] a double stack bracelet," Mathias recommended.
