There's a new red carpet trend that's shoulders above of rest—well, one shoulder, that is.

One-shoulder dresses that showcase the often overlooked body part have been popping up on the red carpet. (So, if you've been religiously doing your shoulders presses, now's your chance to shine!)

Salma Hayek, Jennifer Lopez, Lea Michele and Berenice Marlohe have been showing off their toned arms with gowns that are a little less revealing than the classic strapless, but just as elegant.

Lopez stunned in a Chantilly lace Lanvin dress at the recent 21st UNESCO Charity Gala. Take a style note from the singer, who pairs her dress with eye-catching drop earrings. Necklaces compete with the one-shoulder style, so it's best to stick to bracelets or earrings when choosing jewelry.

If you want to add more flair, chose a scalloped neckline like Lopez. A sculptural detail, like the one on Marlohe's Armani Privé red carpet look also offers a little more visual interest.

But really, the asymmetrical neckline makes enough of a statement. Have you noticed that all these leading ladies are wearing basic black? The one-shoulder dress offers a simple way to spice up the go-to color or a LBD like Michele's.

We recommend wearing this style with an updo such as Hayek's to really show off the asymmetry, but if you opt for loose locks, make sure to push back hair behind the exposed shoulder just like Lopez and Michele.

What do you think of one-shoulder dresses? Would you invest in one to add variety to your LBDs?
