Community's Dan Harmon Close to Signing on With Fox

A source at Fox tells us, "They're still figuring out what the show would be, but Harmon is a free agent and they want to lock him down."

Fox sources confirm Community's ousted boss Dan Harmon is nearing a deal for a new comedy project.

Though details of the new series are not yet known, we're told it's possible the show could be a multi-camera effort, unlike Community, and Fox is close to closing a deal for Harmon to write the pilot.

This marks Harmon's first new comedy deal since being relieved (how's that for putting it gently!?) from his Community duties in May. He was replaced by new showrunners Moses Port and David Guarascio.

"They're still figuring out what the show would be," a Fox insider tells me. "But Harmon is a free agent and they want to lock him down." Harmon does not currently have a development deal at any network or studio, and the new project would likely be produced by Fox's Twentieth Century studio.

Earlier this week, NBC President Bob Greenblatt made his first comments about Harmon's firing, telling reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour: "Every so often it's time to make a change with a showrunner and you evaluate the creative and how the show is run and how writing staff works. Sometimes you want to freshen a show and we just decided it was time to do that with Community."

Harmon has worked with Fox before: He cowrote the 1999 pilot Heat Vision and Jack, starring Jack Black and Owen Wilson.
