Teresa Heinz Kerry, the wife of Secretary of State John Kerry, has been hospitalized in critical but stable condition after being stricken in Nantucket with an undisclosed ailment.

A State Department spokesman, Glen Johnson, said in a statement via the Boston Globe that the 74-year-old Kerry fell ill at the family's vacation home.

"Late Sunday afternoon, Mrs. Teresa Heinz Kerry was taken by ambulance to Nantucket Cottage Hospital, accompanied by her husband, Secretary of State John Kerry," Johnson said. "Once doctors had stabilized her condition, she was transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, again accompanied by the Secretary."

No word on her current condition, but the spokesman added that "the family is grateful for the outpouring of support it has received and aware of the interest in her condition, but they ask for privacy at this time."

A source, however, told My Fox Boston that the Portuguese-American businesswoman and noted philanthropist apparently exhibited seizure-like symptoms. She remains in critical, but stable condition.

This isn't the first health scare for Heinz Kerry. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009 after an annual mammogram and underwent lumpectomies in both breasts as well as radiation treatment.

Rob Lowe was among a slew of well-wishers who took to Twitter to pray for Heinz Kerry's recovery.

"Sending prayers and good thoughts to Teresa Heinz Kerry," the former West Wing star tweeted. "Hoping for a full-speedy recovery for a remarkable woman."

Heinz Kerry played an instrumental part in John Kerry's unsuccessful democratic presidential campaign in 2004, serving as an able spokeswoman for her husband's character and political views in addition to such celebrity endorsements the then-Senator garnered from the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi and Carole King.

After Kerry's ascension to the job of secretary of state, she frequently accompanied her husband on official trips abroad.

Get well, Teresa!
