Prepare to say goodbye to Moira Rose—Schitt's Creek is coming to an end.
The comedy, created by father-son duo Dan Levy and Eugene Levy, is now in its fifth season on Pop in the United States and CBC in Canada. Dan took to Twitter to share the news that the show will be back for its sixth season, but it will be its last.
"We are very excited to announce that Schitt's Creek is coming back for a sixth season on CBC and Pop in 2020! We also wanted to take this opportunity to let you know that we have decided season six will be our last. We are so grateful to have been given the time and creative freedom to tell this story in its totality, concluding with a final chapter that we had envisioned from the very beginning. It's not lost on us what a rare privilege it is in this industry to get to decide when your show should take its final bow. We could never have dreamed that our fans would grow to love and care about these characters in the ways that you have," the Levys wrote.
"We are all so excited to begin shooting these last 14 episodes and can't thank you enough for the overwhelming love and generosity you've shown us. We hope you continue to enjoy the rest of our fifth seas as we prepare to shoot our sixth!" the note ended.
The Levys star in the series alongside Catherine O'Hara, Annie Murphy, Chris Elliott, Emily Hampshire, Jennifer Robertson, Noah Reid, Dustin Milligan, Sarah Levy, and Karen Robinson. The series follows the Roses, a rich family who lost everything thanks to their business manager. The only thing they had left? The deed to a small town named Schitt's Creek where they were forced to relocate to and assimilate to the small town culture.
"Schitt's Creek is that rare zeitgeist show that creates incredible fandom, catalyzes culture, and receives best-of-television critical praise for its intelligence, character development, laughter and heart," Brad Schwartz, President of Pop, said in a statement. "Schitt's Creek has given all of us a joyous gift that, in my opinion, places the show among the very best. Everyone at Pop could not be more proud than to have been associated with what Dan Levy and Eugene Levy created alongside this amazing cast and crew. While we will miss this gem with all our heart, we are thrilled that the show will end its run exactly as the show's creators intended."
Schitt's Creek premiered in 2015 and over time has developed a cult following thanks to its availability to stream on Netflix. The series has been heralded for its performances, specifically from O'Hara as a former soap star and the matriarch of the family, Moira Rose, as well as its inclusivity. Co-creator Dan Levy who plays David Rose, a pansexual character, and said he made it a choice not have homophobia in the show.
"In Schitt's Creek, homophobia and bigotry don't exist. I made that decision because I wanted to show the transformational effects of love - how loving openly and wholly, without fear of judgement, can let light into even the most protected of hearts. Sadly, that isn't real life for many who still live in fear of the consequences of coming out," Levy wrote on Instagram in October. "For those who have, happy #nationalcomingoutday, and for those who have yet to for whatever reason or circumstance, we will keep fighting for you. And we'll be here for you if ever, whenever."
