What do ghosting, health goths, and Pokémon all have in common? They're all words that are being added to the dictionary. We can't make this stuff up, people. Dictionary.com plopped a bunch of super on-trend words into their database today proving that millennials and their slang are taking over the world. Honestly, why not? The updated dictionary will totally come in handy the next time our mom asks us what 'totes' means. You'll find that word, along with phrases like 'woke,' 'train wreck' and 'butthurt' on Dictionary.com starting today.
Here's a list of our faves with their definitions, according to Dictionary.com:
Al Desko: "Eating at one's desk in an office."
Athleisure: "A style of clothing inspired by athletic apparel but also worn as casual, everyday wear."
Butthurt: "Mental distress or irritation caused by an overreaction to a perceived personal slight."
Deso: "Designated driver."
Free-Range Parenting: "A style of child rearing in which parents allow their children to move about without constant adult supervision, aimed at instilling independence and self-reliance."
Ghosting: "The practice of suddenly ending all contact with a person without explanation, especially in a romantic relationship."
Health Goth: "A fitness enthusiast who is part of the goth subculture."
Lumbersexual: "A man whose style of dress and appearance is reminiscent of the ruggedly masculine stereotype of the lumberjack."
Manspread: "To sit with one's legs far apart, taking up too much space on a seat shared with other people."
Mom Jeans: "Unstylish women's jeans."
NBD: "Acronym for no big deal."
Pokémon: "A media franchise including video games, animated television series, movies, card games, etc. that depict a fictional class of pet monsters and their trainers."
Train Wreck: "A person who has experienced a personal failure, disaster, etc."
Warmist: " A person who accepts global warming as a reality (a term used by people who reject the concept)."
Woke: "Actively aware of systemic injustices and prejudices, especially those related to civil and human rights."
To be totally real with you guys, we've never used the words 'deso' or 'al desko,' but they'll be added just in case you wanted to try them out. Our favorite entries have to be 'mom jeans,' 'NBD' and, of course, Pokémon, the trend that keeps on giving. In addition to all of the goofy slang terms, you'll notice the site added a variety of words taken from politics and world events. In addition to this list, there are more than 300 new adds to the dictionary as of today. Numerous updates to existing words have taken place as well. At this rate, it's only a matter of time before we see 'Hiddleswift' in there.
