We're willing to bet that there's not one person out there who doesn't have at least a little part of themselves that would be intrigued by living in the world of Harry Potter. Regular school is a drag; Hogwarts is not. Walking is a drag; apparating is not. And don't even get us started on getting to drink butter beer.
Yes, we'd pretty much give our left arm to experience just a little bit of that Harry Potter life. But it seems as though we're not alone, because a team of researchers at Pennsylvania State University is trying to make the invisibility cloak a real thing—and they just unveiled the results of their hard work in the journal Science. Or, should we say, a team of heroes at Pennsylvania State University. Because this is God's work.
Now that we've got you all excited, it's time for some science mumbo jumbo and fine print. First, this is technically not a cloak, it's "nanomaterial" that resembles a sleek skin. So sleek, in fact, that it's 1,000 times thinner than a human hair.
Next, it doesn't work on people quite yet. "With our new design we have made it possible to hide a small, 3D object of any arbitrary shape, and have it appear completely flat," lead researcher Xingjie Ni told the journal.
And also, unlike Harry's cloak, you won't be able to see through anything that inside this invisibility skin. It simply makes things look flat so that the untrained eye doesn't know it's there. But...baby steps, people! Every invisibility cloak has to start somewhere, right?
