As if John Travolta and Kelly Preston didn't have enough to worry about...

Bahamian officials and lawyers for the family have confirmed to E! News that police are investigating a scarce-on-details plot to extort the grief-stricken family.

"I can confirm that we received a report and we are trying to determine whether or not a criminal offense was being committed," Royal Bahamas Police Assistant Commissioner Raymond Gibson told E! News. "That is all we have at this time."

While the nature of the demands made on the Travoltas has not been revealed, the reported extortion came in the wake of the death of their 16-year-old son, Jett, in the Bahamas Jan. 2.

"Regrettably in a time of such terrible grief there are often a few individuals who attempt to make false claims in hopes of making millions of dollars," Travolta family attorneys Mike Ossi and Howard Butler said in a statement.

"We will never let that happen."

The Nassau-based Tribune newspaper reported earlier this week that police have begun questioning two people in connection with the alleged extortion, one of whom is "believed to be a politician."
