John Mayer Blows Off the Press—Is He Hiding Something or Just Grumpy?

First he quit tweeting. Now it looks like John Mayer may have quit speaking altogether.

The usually (too) outspoken singer refused any interviews last night at the VH1 Save the Music Foundation gala in New York, whizzing past reporters in the red carpet as if he had a train to catch.

So why the silence? And what's with the attitude, John?

Mayer attended the event last night at Cipriani Wall Street, where he was also an honoree. And while other guests like  John Legend, Pete Wentz, Lauren Conrad, Kristin Chenowith, Natasha Bedingfield and host Cheyenne Jackson did their red carpet duty, posing for pics and answering some questions, Mayer, known to give pressers on sidewalks, instead hightailed it inside.

"There was no real reason given for why he didn't want to speak to anyone," one event organizers told E! News. "Just an 'he isn't doing interviews.' He also didn't do any press at the afterparty."

Perhaps he didn't want to talk about those Kim Kardashian rumors?

While he seemed to be enthusiastic about Bedingfield's performance of her Hills theme song, Unwritten, and chatted with Wentz and Joel Madden, Mayer sat quiet for a good chunk of the evening until his short, self-depracating speech on how music changed his life.

Mayer said when he began playing guitar, friends would bring him around and people would say, "Where'd you meet this guy?" He joked that when he became famous, the tone changed to, "Where'd you meet this guy?"

Then he went off the rails a bit, cracking a joke about sending bottles of wine to women after they give "vaginal birth."

OK, maybe it was better when he stayed quiet.
