Oh, OK: We'd like to thank the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for nominating Lost in Best Drama! Because you know what that means, don't you? In just two short months, we can enjoy hot castmembers in formal wear! Yay, and congrats to the entire Lost team! Additional kudos to the good and kind Michael Emerson, who got himself another Best Supporting Actor nom. Congrats, Ben Linus, you are an evil delight. It's also worth noting that of the five Best Drama Writing nods, four (yes, four!) went to some variation of Matthew Weiner for Mad Men and only Damon and Carlton's writing on "The Incident" held the line against the Mad Men writing tsunami. (Sorry, Mad Men is a really good show, but Lost is our first and truest love.)
Read on to get the official Watch With Kristin reaction to this morning's nominations. There are many treats and surprises to be discussed!
The Best Drama noms are the usual cavalcade of grown-up shows. Great to see friendly faces like House, Dexter and Big Love. Sadly, with so many popular standouts, there was apparently no room at the inn for The Shield, Sons of Anarchy or Battlestar Galactica. Blah. Also not nominated this year? True Blood. Hmmm...
Over in Best Comedy, it's good to see fan faves HIMYM, The Office, 30 Rock and Weeds. The Big Bang Theory got no love as a series, but Family Guy and Flight of the Conchords were happily recognized!
The Best Reality noms salute the very deserving The Amazing Race and the gold standards of glossy reality shows, Project Runway and Top Chef. But we can't help but be bummed that Dancing With the Stars was nominated, while So You Think You Can Dance was dissed as a series. We persist in thinking that SYTYCD is educational TV magic that belongs in the Smithsonian as part of the national record of American culture. Still, congrats to NappyTabs, Mia Michaels, Tyce Diorio and Dmitry Chaplin for their choreography nods!
Another treat we're delighted to get is Elisabeth Moss' Best Drama Actress nomination for Mad Men! Peggy is the best! We're disappointed to not see Lost's Evangeline Lilly or Elizabeth Mitchell, but it's nice to see an underdog in the gang along with perennial contender Mariska Hargitay and the likes of Glenn Close and Holly Hunter.
(Can we say something evil? Is it just us or do the Emmy nominators seem to always save a few slots for "Oscar-winning female who deigns to do TV"? And why can't Mary McDonnell get some of that action? Her two Oscar nominations and her four years of brilliance on BSG are not chopped liver!)
Oh, and speaking of actresses who were robbed: Where the hell is Connie Britton for Friday Night Lights?!
The Best Drama Actor nods are perfectly respectable, but again, ugh, why no room for the sexy people?! No Lost, BSG, True Blood, Kyle Chandler, nothing!
Over in Comedy land, Christina Applegate got an acting nod, which leaves ABC looking a little silly for canceling Samantha Who?, and Sarah Silverman makes a first-time appearance. Sarah Silverman, your Twitter is too dirty for us to follow, but you seem like a cool girl. But even though the Best Comedy Actress category is populated with the likes of our god Tina Fey and the insanely talented Toni Collette, we still want Mary-Louise Parker to win for Weeds. And not just because of her recent Esquire spread, although that was pretty damn hot, too.
The Best Comedy Actor category includes Tony Shalhoub because apparently that is an inevitability. (He's the nicest guy in the world, but seriously? Every! Year!) At least that dull routine was leavened by the first-time nom for Jim Parsons. Also yay for Steve Carell and Alec Baldwin. But no Zachary Levi for Chuck? Come on people! Watch the TV before you vote!
Hey, Emmys, next year, can you please read the series supporting noms on TV in the morning instead of the miniseries nonsense that no one cares about except for HBO executives? We liked Taking Chance and Grey Gardens as much as anyone else, but let's get our priorities straight, and our priorities say that Kenneth the Page is more important in TV land than the Coco Chanel movie on Lifetime. (We enjoyed it plenty, but seriously! Priorities!)
Yes, you heard that right, Jack McBrayer was nominated, along with Tracy Morgan and Jane Krakowski, all for 30 Rock. Other comedy noms we love included Kristin Chenoweth for Pushing Daisies, Elizabeth Perkins as Celia Hodes on Weeds, Rainn Wilson as Dwight on The Office, NPH as Barney on HIMYM and Kevin Dillon's Johnny Drama on Entourage.
Supporting Drama Actor noms of note include Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad (we told you he was wicked good), John Slattery as Roger Sterling on Mad Men (did you see the exclusive Mad Men season-three photo we posted that includes him and Jon Hamm?) and Chandra Wilson and Sandra Oh for Grey's Anatomy—oooh, no Katherine Heigl! You would have thought that cancer storyline was a no-fail Emmy-nom-snaggin' proposition!
Last but not least, cool Guest Actor noms include Jon Hamm on 30 Rock, CCH Pounder on The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency (that was such a sad ep!), Jimmy Smits' turn as Miguel Prado on Dexter and Tina Fey's gig as Sarah Palin on SNL. Oh, and Justin Timberlake (or J.Tim as we like to call him) also got a nomination for his work on SNL. Well-played, sir!
