Dancing With the Stars About to Freeze Over

ABC is hoping to skate away with ratings gold.

The Olympics pulled aces for NBC, due in some part to the popularity of all the figure skating coverage, and the Dancing With the Stars net wants in. An untitled on-ice version of their reality competition tent pole is in the works, production company BBC Worldwide confirms to The Hollywood Reporter.

Perhaps gold medalist Evan Lysacek worked out some sort of twofer deal with the producers and we'll see him on both shows!

BBC Worldwide Productions, which also produces Dancing, has done the frozen thing before. They're the team behind the U.K.'s six-year-old show Strictly Ice Dancing.

This series is expected to feature six teams of celebrities partnered with professional skaters, much like the ballroom show. Themed rounds will be judged based on technical and artistic merit.

"ABC has become an incredible partner for us—we mirror each other's vision in attaining production excellence and we look forward to taking our relationship to the ice," Jane Tranter, executive vice president of programming and production for BBC Worldwide Productions, tells the trade. "This program will be a truly unique and exciting experience for their viewers."

We know you've seen this before. In 2006, Fox attempted a similar experiment with Skating With Celebrities wherein actress Kristy Swanson and Lloyd Eisler completed a feat that could only be described as a quad: a trophy, marriage, baby and divorce all rolled into one.

For those of you who can't wait, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and four-time World champion Kurt Browning are hosting Thin Ice, a skating special on the Alphabet net, on March 19 and 21. Dick Button, Katarina Witt and Kristi Yamaguchi are judging 10 champion skaters partnering up and competing against each other.
