Three decades before his untimely death, Prince recorded a song that eerily plays out like a postmortem ode. Could the spiritual star have predicted the spring tragedy that was to come?

In 1986, the late star directed his first film, Under the Cherry Moon, which focused on a lady's man named Christopher Tracy plotting to swindle wealthy women out of their money. Prince starred as the protagonist alongside Jerome Benton—one of the members of the Prince-founded band The Time—as the character's sidekick Tricky.

While the film was a critical flop, the accompanying soundtrack album Parade was strongly regarded as Prince's creative comeback after his previous album, Around the World in a Day, had also fallen flat.

Among the 12 tracks on the album was the finale ballad "Sometimes It Snows in April," an emotional and solemn tune in dedication to the deceased lead character, Tracy.

The song begins with peaceful hums from Prince before he launches into the first lyric. "Tracy died soon after a long fought civil war, just after I'd wiped away his last tear," the ode begins. "I guess he's better off than he was before—a whole lot better off than the fools he left here. I used to cry for Tracy because he was my only friend. Those kind of cars don't pass you every day. I used to cry for Tracy because I wanted to see him again, but sometimes sometimes life ain't always the way."

The lyrics feel prophetic in hindsight as family, friends and millions of fans cry for the loss of the legend and wish for his return. It's almost as if Prince was singing about himself as he starred in the lead role.

Most strangely, the song describes a death in April, the same month Prince was discovered by authorities in an elevator at his Paisley Park compound in Minnesota.

The lyrics flow on, offering feelings we've all had about losing a loved one.

"Sometimes it snows in April. Sometimes I feel so bad, so bad. Sometimes I wish life was never ending and all good things, they say, never last."

In a concluding phrase, Prince perfectly summarizes how all those who loved him are feeling today and are bound to feel in the days ahead.

"I often dream of heaven and I know that Tracy's there. I know that he has found another friend. Maybe he's found the answer to all the April snow. Maybe one day I'll see my Tracy again."

As many hope, maybe one day we'll see our Prince again.
