Ben Lyons' Predictions: Globes Movie Biggies

No Country for Old MenMiramax Pictures

It was a great year for films of all shapes and sizes, and now it's time for me to put my money where my mouth is. It isn't easy. I'm not always content with predicting something I believe doesn't deserve to win, but hey, that's the nature of the beast. Here are my predix. You with me?

Best Picture, Drama:  No Country for Old Men

Weird category this year, as seven films received nominations, yet the best movie this year, Into The Wild, was nowhere to be found. What a joke! Of the films nominated, though, I'm predicting No Country for Old Men will take it. Terrifying and filled with great performances from Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem and Tommy Lee Jones, it won at Cannes and has been on a roll ever since.
Doane Gregory/20th Century Fox

Best Picture, Comedy:  Juno

Why can't there be seven noms in every category? Who knows how the Hollywood Foreign Press Association makes its wacky decisions, but one thing I do know is that theose voters love musicals. It was a strong year for the genre, with Sweeney Todd, Hairspray and Across The Universe, but look for the quirky smash hit Juno to walk away with a Globe. With no Judd Apatow films in the mix (Superbad, Knocked Up and Walk Hard were all ignored), this is the one to beat.

Best Actor, Drama:  Daniel Day-Lewis, There Will Be Blood

A star-studded, A-list category this year, with guys like Denzel, Viggo and George. Oh, and James McAvoy, but he still needs a last name, so he's not such a big deal yet, right? Again, Emile Hirsch? Into The Wild? Hirsch is nominated everywhere else and will get an Oscar nom, but it seems like the HFPA punished him because of its disdain for Sean Penn. That's not right. Anyway, look for Day-Lewis to win. He doesn't make a lot of movies, but when he does, he always delivers a masterful performance.

Best Actress, Drama:  Angelina Jolie, A Mighty Heart

Cate Blanchett has two nominations this year, but she won't win in this category. Look for Jolie to take it for her uncanny transformation as Marianne Pearl, the widow of slain journalist Daniel Pearl. The HFPA loves big stars, and none more than Mrs. Pitt. Plus, she is nothing short of brilliant in the role.

Best Actor, Comedy or Musical:  Johnny Depp, Sweeney Todd

I love me some Dewey Cox, but don't look for John C. Reilly (or John Travolta, either) to win on Globes night. Depp, who had never done a musical and never snagged a Globe despite being nominated numerous times, will win this year. Don't agree with me? How about a haircut, and I'll slit your throat!

Best Actress, Comedy or Musical:  Nikki Blonsky, Hairspray

I'm biased, as I want for nothing more than to see my good friend Nikki win the Globe. If Jennifer Hudson got it last year, I can see Nikki being this year's newcomer, right? I'm concerned, though, by the really good chances of Ellen Page. It comes down to the two of them, and I guess I'd be happy either way.

Best Supporting, Actor:  Javier Bardem, No Country for Old Men

Easy. A lock. With Into the Wild's Hal Holbrook not in the mix, look for Bardem to win in a landslide. Take it to the bank.

Best Supporting Actress:  Cate Blanchett, I'm Not There

Another lock. Blanchett playing Bob Dylan is a tutorial in great acting. Ambitious, original and simply incredible. Like Javier, you can cash this one now.
