Watch: "Shadowhunters" Stars Are Proud of Their Malec

We saw the beginnings of the Clary-Simon-Jace love triangle in the Shadowhunters premiere, but how about another fan-favorite relationship? That's right, we're talking about Malec—the blossoming love between Shadowhunter Alec Lightwood (Matthew Daddario) and centuries-old warlock Magnus Bane (Harry Shum Jr.) that has been explored throughout Cassandra Clare's book series on which the TV show is based.

Don't worry—just because there wasn't any Malec action in the series debut doesn't mean there won't be any. In fact, episode 12 of the series is called "Malec"—but you won't have to wait that long to see the two characters grow closer. The two actors tell E! News that they're really proud of how they portrayed the beginning stages of their romance, and they think fans will be happy to watch it develop as the weeks go on.

"I'm really happy with what we did with it, and I think I'm very proud of it and I think that we've done something very effective and to the story," Daddario tells us. Adds Shum, "and done with care."

That was an important factor for the cast—to tell Alec and Magnus' love story with respect. "A lot of thought went into it because it's obviously very important to a lot of people and it's also important to us that we stay true to something that has an effect on people's lives—at least we hope it does," says Daddario.

"For audiences that haven't read the books or don't even know what that word means," explains Shum, "I think we've done well with the show with pleasing the fans that do know about it and also the fans that can learn and see the story unfold between those two characters."

Watch the duo discuss their characters' relationship in the video above! Shadowhunters airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on Freeform (formerly ABC Family).
