In preparation for the chilly season, we're lining our shelves with one of autumn's favorite fabrics: suede. The soft, oftentimes faux leather can bring an interesting texture to an otherwise casual or semi-formal outfit—it has a delicate touch like velvet while emitting tough vibes.

Even though suede is a cold-weather staple, designers like Marissa Webb weren't afraid to add the fabric into their spring 2016 collections this fashion week. (We love how the black-and-white print peeks out just below the dress and draws the eyes to the entire look.) But how do you wear this supple material without looking like you're in a Western? Let's look to these style savants for inspiration.

Although this fabric is softer than most leathers, it has all the attributes of a good fall jacket: thick, sturdy and comfortable. But if you don't want to look like you're heading to the saloon, do as Amal Clooney did, and pair with an ultra-feminine, flirty outfit.

Suede doesn't drape well and sometimes is hard to layer. Instead, add dimension with other solid separates in different colors. Olivia Palermo did it right during fall 2015 fashion week when she mixed and matched a suede skirt with equally fall-appropriate hues.

Knee-high or over-the-top boots were made for fall walking, but tucking your pants into your shoes can be exhausting and what's the point of buying cute boots if you're going to hide them underneath your jeans? Enter: the maxi-dress with a thigh-high slit—it's perfect for showing off the svelte suede.

You never want to veer too costume-y, but keep in mind the ‘70s revival in fashion. Ciara knows all too well that fringe and suede are the perfect match, pairing her look with flares and modern platforms. If you want a more subtle version of this look, keep the fringe limited to a suede bag or skirt.

As evidenced by the model walking in the Marissa Web show, head-to-toe suede will be a major trend next season and beyond. For a more wearable look, do as Poppy Delevingne did and break up the monotony with a sliver of skin in between suede separates.
