We presume it's not a happy hump day for soccer star Clint Dempsey

The 32-year-old athlete, who plays for the Seattle Sounders, is making headlines today after last night's U.S. Open Cup game, which saw the Portland Timbers beat the Sounders with a score of 3-1.

While the fourth-round match was undoubtedly a disappointing loss for Seattle (it's the first time they've been defeated in U.S. Open Cup game at Starfire Stadium), the scoreboard only tells a small portion of what exactly went down on the field on Tuesday.

According to multiple reports, the Sounders finished the game with just seven players after three were sent off the field—Dempsey, Brad Evans, Michael Azira—and one, Nigeria player Obafemi Martins, was injured.

In the 69th minute, Evans was reportedly sent off after receiving his second yellow card followed by Martins injury in the 85th, which reduced the team to just nine players.

But it wasn't until the 111th minute when Dempsey lost his cool after teammate Azira received a red card for apparently striking a Timbers player with his elbow.

Video from the game shows Dempsey, who is currently the captain of the U.S. Men's National Team, seemingly reacting to the call before angrily approaching the referee at which point he appears to swat a piece of paper out of his hand and rips it to shreds.

As expected, that didn't go over too well with the ref, who then issued Dempsey a red card of his own and sent him off the field, thereby reducing the team to seven players.

And in case that wasn't enough to prove Dempsey wasn't pleased, he sarcastically clapped in the assistant ref's face while walking off the field.

It's unclear whether there will be any further penalties for Dempsey, who has yet to publicly address the controversy.

Regardless, it's safe to say he's not a fan of the rule book.
