Melissa Rivers and son Cooper are doing their part to keep Joan Rivers' legacy alive.
The mother-son duo was on hand on Tuesday for the God's Love We Deliver dedication of the new Michael Kors building in NYC, where The Joan Rivers Bakery was also created in honor of the late comedienne, who was a longtime supporter charity, which works to improve the health of men, women and children living with serious illnesses.
"It's so exciting," Rivers told E! News at the event while standing with her arm fondly wrapped around her son. "I remember when my mother first got involved and he's [Cooper's] now third generation being in love with this charity...it's phenomenal."
Asked how her mother would react to the opening of the bakery, Rivers replied with a giant smile, "She'd be beyond thrilled. This charity was so important to her. I think she would be embarrassed by it—with all the attention, but it's the bakery, so she'd be very happy because, you know, it was hard for her to ever pass up a cookie."
Rivers, who is also on the board of the charity, added that the organization's support has been tremendous since her mother's passing.
"It really came together right after she passed," she said of the bakery (Joan Rivers died at the age of 81 in September 2014). "The group here has been so supportive and so amazing and so lovely to us for the past nine months…it's just really special."
Monday, June 6 also marked what would have been the television host's 82nd birthday. "We worked and we had dinner with some friends," the 47-year-old producer revealed of how they celebrated. "It was nice."
Rivers has fond memories of the charity thanks to her mother's efforts to give back to the organization.
"It was a part of the tradition of our Thanksgivings to deliver and I remember the first party at our house she had for them to raise money for the original building," she recalled. "So to be here at the opening of the second building is pretty phenomenal."
As for Cooper's commitment to the charity? He says his grandmother inspires him "every day to be a part of this organization."
