Let it be known right here and right now: French people are judging you for taking selfies.

And for those of us who aspire to be as much like French people as humanly possible, that's an awful big blow to the ego. In fact, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the selfie is hated so much in France that Cannes organizers are trying to ban the practice from this year's festival red carpet.

Why all the selfie animosity you ask? In the words of Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Fremaux, "You never look as ugly as you do in a selfie." Ouch.

Fremaux told the trade that the revered film fest will institute a policy of stopping any attempted selfies. Oh, and he also called the act of taking selfies "ridiculous and grotesque." Gotta love the French!

But there is a slight loophole—this ban is really more of an off-the-books thing, meaning that festival organizers are just gently encouraging celebrities from whipping out their smart phones. If you can call Fremaux's words gentle. It appears the true motivation behind the "rule" is a concern for preventing traffic jams on the carpet of big premieres; when A-listers are too focused on posting the perfect Instagram, it causes major backups getting into events. Security guards will be handing out stern warnings to anyone breaking the rules, albeit in a "glamorous way." Naturally.

This is just the latest blow in what can only be described as a full-out war that fashion is raging on the selfie. Just this Monday none other than Anna Wintour herself banned selfies at the Met Gala, no doubt as a precaution against the influx of Kardashian/Jenners at this year's fete.

A few brave souls dared to break the rules, however, so it seems there may yet be hope for the future of the selfie. Carry on thy noble work, selfie advocates.
