Minimal makeup has become the dominant makeup trend on the red carpet this year. But as style pro Sofía Vergara knows, when paired with a light-as-air gown that seems to float on its own, barely-there makeup can come up looking—gasp—underdone (something that Vergara has never been accused of, much to the delight of her fans).

But the Hot Pursuit actress pulled a beautiful red carpet makeup trick at last night's Met Gala by staying on the less-is-more trend without looking blank-faced, despite donning a neutral Marchesa dress.

How? Instead of doing no-makeup makeup in whisper-light shades, she chose skin-toned hues just a few gradients darker than her natural coloring. Eyes were smoky but done up in earthy browns and buffed out for a super-soft effect. Lips were filled in with a complexion-enhancing, berry-tinged nude. Cheeks were dusted with a rosy glow that brought out her natural radiance.

And in the end, she beamed with the warmth of an organic beauty who just happened to be on one of the biggest red carpet events of the year. No big deal.
