Wilmer Valderrama and Demi Lovato are taking their relationship to the next level.

While they're not engaged (yet), I can exclusively reveal that the two are going to be working on a movie together. And not just any movie—it sounds like it will be the one that will mark Valderrama's feature film directorial debut.

The former That '70s Show star told me earlier today that he's close to announcing the project.

"I won't be able to [shoot] it this year because this year's pretty much gone with my schedule but early next year, I'll probably be directing my first big film," Valderrama said while promoting his new indie murder thriller, The Girl Is in Trouble (available on VOD and in theaters on Friday, April 3). "I'm going to be in it as well. When I did Larry Crowne and I saw that Tom Hanks could direct, produce, write and star in a movie all at the same time, he kind of gave me hope that it was possible for me to do, too.

"It's all about scheduling, management of your time and having good partners who will tell you when your take sucks," he added.

And that's when I asked if Ms. Lovato would be handling the soundtrack. "You're very smart," Valderrama said. "I can't confirm but her and I are definitely looking forward to doing a bunch of things together and it will come together once we make an announcement in the next couple of weeks."

In The Girl Is in Trouble, Valderrama plays a gangbanger whose drug dealer brother is killed during a night of heavy partying.

Valderrama leaves his sweet face behind for a gritty look that includes neck tattoos.

He didn't wash the temporary skin art off when he wasn't working.

"I wore them out," Valderrama said with a big laugh. "I wanted to see how people would look at me…I had a shaved head, the goatee and I gained a little weight for the character and then I put on the tattoos. I would walk into stores and people wouldn't recognize me and they wouldn't even say hi to me. They wouldn't say, 'Good morning.' I'd walk out of the hotel and people assumed that I wanted to be left alone. It was a cool exercise for me to walk in those shoes."

He also got the thumbs-up from friends who are, well, familiar with the thug lifestyle. "They looked at the character and were like, 'Yup, I know a guy like that,'" Valderrama said. "That to me was a great compliment."

The Girl Is in Trouble also stars Columbus Short, Chicago Fire's Jesse Spencer and Alicja Bachleda-Curuś.
