With a rock like this one, why on Earth would you ever cover it up? Well, if you're Lady Gaga, a custom-made Azzedine Alaïa outfit must take precedent before sentiment.

Actually, the real story behind Gaga covering up the heart-shaped engagement ring from boyfriend Taylor Kinney with elbow-length red gloves is much simpler.

"Mr. Alaïa actually designed this before I was engaged to Taylor," Gaga explained. "It wasn't [strategic]."

This is the first time in Alaïa's career that he's designed a custom gown for the Oscars red carpet, and because it was a historic dress and because it's for Gaga, he certainly went all out.

"It took 1,600 hours and 25 people. It's all hand-embroidered," she said while showing off the sparkling white gown with gloves that kind of look like what you wear to protect your hands while washing dishes. But rest assured, her six-carat, $400,000 sparkler will be on display during Gaga's musical performance at the big show tonight.

"It's a tribute performance and I really have put my heart into preparing for it. I'm very honored to be here tonight and I can't wait to perform for all of the nominees. It's just a wonderful night to celebrate Hollywood," she told Ryan Seacrest. "I will of course have [my ring] on out in the open during the performance to give me magical powers.

With a diamond that big, we're pretty certain it has the power to rule all of Hollywood, much like the one ring in Lord of the Rings.
