Beyoncé Opens Up About Her Father's Trauma During Emotional Behind-the-Scenes Grammys Video

There was a lot more to Beyoncé's emotional Grammys performance than met the eye.

The crooner shared a behind-the-scenes video of her rendition of "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" on her website for the Beyhive to drool over and Bey revealed some of her own personal connections to the gospel track.

"The first time I heard 'Precious Lord,' I was a kid and my mother sang it to me. My mother played Mahalia Jackson's version and she sang the song with her eyes closed. She was a vessel and it was like God speaking, using her body to speak and to heal," Blue Ivy's mama shared in the clip.

She added that she "wanted to find real men that have lived, have struggled, cried and have a light and spirit about them" to join her onstage during the performance.

"I felt like this is an opportunity to show the strength and vulnerability in black men," she explained.

"My grandparents marched with Dr. [Martin Luther] King and my father was part of the first generation of black men that attended an all-white school. And my father has grown up with a lot of trauma from those experiences," the Grammy winner continued.

"I feel like now I can sing for his pain. I can sing for my grandparents' pain. I can sing for some of the families that have lost their sons."

Sunday night, John Legend and Common followed Bey's heartfelt performance to sing their Golden Globe-winning duet from Selma, "Glory."
