Long before Matthew McConaughey launched the McConaissance, he was just a young college student at the University of Texas at Austin trying to become an actor. With only a few commercials under his belt, the hunk decided to audition for Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused.

His audition shows him as the cool, yet slightly creepy David Wooderson who would soon be launched into fame as one of the most familiar (and hot!) actors of our time. Whatever Linklater saw that day in our beloved McConaughey is something that remains a mystery, but we're just thrilled that the young star decided to give the stoner classic a try!

Working alongside his future co-star, McConaughey dishes out his lines flawlessly. We can't help but love his shaggy blond flow and MTV Headbangers Ball tour shirt LOL. Ohhh, the '90s.

Although this would be the film that catapulted him into fame, his work as of late has shown off his real acting chops, having won an Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club and a Golden Globe for True Detective. Sadly, we think his romantic comedy days are behind him, but we're still looking forward to seeing what else the hunk has in store for us as a part of his McConaissance.

Part of this journey, however, has been witnessing him growing out a super scruffy beard, which shocked us at the AFI Awards Luncheon and the Golden Globes. Not only was his beard a surprise, but the unkempt nature of it probably made everybody take a second look. Fortunately, it turns out, the new facial 'do has to do with his upcoming film The Free State of Jones, which takes place during the Civil War.

His wife, Camila Alves, has also been playing around with her hair as of late, so we are a little curious to see if it's an act of solidarity. But let's be serious, she always looks gorgeous no matter what she does to her mane!
