With her angular cheekbones and demonic horns, Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) is easy to recognize—unless you're Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning), that is. After all, the last time the princess encountered the Mistress of All Evil was at her baptism—you know, the one where Maleficent cast a curse on her?

So when the princess spots the villainess in the woods, she doesn't anticipate the potential dangers ahead. "I know you're there," Aurora says, peering into the enchanted forest. "Don't be afraid."

"I am not afraid," Maleficent tells her. Aurora pleads with her to "come out," insisting she's not scared.

After Maleficent emerges from the shadows, Aurora marvels at her appearance. "I know who you are," she says. (Clearly, she doesn't.) "You're my fairy godmother," she tells Maleficent. (Um, not exactly...)

When they weren't in character, the actresses got along famously. "Right away, she gave me a giant hug and she said, 'Oh, we're going to have so much fun working together,'" Fanning said at a May 9 photo call in London. "When I did see her in the costume for the first time, I wasn't scared. I was more excited. But she had those contact lenses in and she definitely didn't look like herself, that's for sure."

Jolie may have looked menacing on set, but in actuality, she was happier than ever. "As much as she's a villain, and she's dark, and she's considered mean, I was very playful as her," the Academy Award winner said of her role. "I came home kind of silly. My children love Maleficent's voice, so they always make me do it at home. I think it actually brought out the child in me to be a part of this kind of film."

Maleficent is in theaters May 30.
