A cute froyo date. A romantic stroll through NYC. Flirting by a gorgeous fountain. Two trips to the Empire State Building. You can expect all that (and so much more rom-com goodness!) to go down between Mindy (Mindy Kaling) and Danny (Chris Messina) in The Mindy Project's epic season two finale, airing Tuesday, May 6.
But are all of those dates actually happening or are they just in our heroine's head? Regardless, Mindy will look perfect in each and every scenario—real or not!
"The finale, we have lots of different scenes and it has to be this perfect ideal romantic world that's going to be juxtaposed with the real world, so we needed lots of different costumes and looks for her," star and writer Ike Barinholtz explained of the many costume changes fans will see Kaling go through in the perfect half-hour nugget of TV.
In order to bring together the finale's fashion, the Fox sitcom's costume designer Salvador Perez, who is currently working on Pitch Perfect 2, turned to brands such as London Fog, French Connection and J. Crew to help find Mindy's Meg Ryan-rom-com-worthy looks—23 of them, to be exact!
"For the season finale, we had the huge task of putting together 23 outfits for Mindy in the episode, we knew we would be shooting a montage in New York City," Perez explained. "The shots would be quick, so I wanted to make an impact with color. I put Mindy in blocks of color, as Mindy can wear color so beautifully."
And while Perez has often turned to Marc Jacobs and Ellie Tahari when pulling together Dr. L.'s looks, he was able to do something special for the final outing of season two: custom-design outfits for Kaling, including the one she sports for one of the episode's most pivotal scenes.
"We also had the opportunity to design and make some of the outfits, including her final outfit the rose pink plaid vest and skirt with polka dot blouse and matching tie," he told us. "I wanted a modern version of a 1970s woman's suit. It's one of my favorite outfits of the season."
The Mindy Project season two finale airs Tuesday, May 6, at 9: 30 p.m. on Fox.
