This wasn't the smash hit D'Angelo was looking for.

The R&B crooner is reportedly lucky to be alive after being hospitalized in critical condition last week when his Hummer sport utility vehicle accidentally swerved off a road outside his hometown of Richmond, West Virginia, and hit a fence.

The crash occurred Sept. 19, while the 31-year-old D'Angelo, real name Michael Archer, was in a car en route through Powhatan County.

According to a statement from Virginia State Police, the Hummer subsequently ran off the road, struck a fence and flipped over. The singer, who wasn't wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the vehicle and suffered critical injuries. Another passenger, Lynne Sellers, was also injured.

While no details were available on Sellers' condition, D'Angelo's lawyer, L. Londell McMillan, released a statement on Monday letting fans know that the entertainer is going to be just fine.

"D'Angelo is home and doing well. He is anxious to finish the recording of his soul masterpiece that the world has patiently awaited. His spirit is very positive and he is blessed that the accident was not fatal," said McMillan.

The accident is under investigation.

No word on whether D'Angelo was behind the wheel, but that's a detail investigators will no doubt examine, given the Grammy winner recently received a three-year suspended prison sentence after pleading no contest to felony cocaine possession stemming from a January DUI.

The Virginia native was pulled over during a routine traffic stop in Richmond for drunk driving and a subsequent search turned up marijuana and cocaine.

After pleading guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol in April, D'Angelo had his license suspended for at least one year, was fined $250 and handed a 100-day suspended jail term. For the pot conviction, he received a $50 fine, a 10-day suspended jail term and had his license suspended an additional six months.

D'Angelo won a pair of Grammys in 2000--Best R&B Album for his last release, Voodoo and Best Male R&B Performance for his hit "Untitled (How Does it feel)." The performer's other hits include the silky-smooth "U Will Know" as well as "Brown Sugar" and a cover of Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin."
