In the latest issue of Esquire UK, the actress manages to cover a lot of ground—the good, the bad and the ugly—in a revealing interview.
For instance, she talks about the challenges that came with becoming an overnight sensation when she costarred with Jude Law in 2004's Alfie. Oh, and the fact that she also happened to be Law's girlfriend at the time as well.
"I was really naive, I think. I was a young 21," the now 32-year-old says. "Not green as grass—I was by no means an innocent—but I had faith in the goodness of everyone. I was very open. And that led me into all sorts of situations that backfired."
And while Miller worked steadily following her initial success, her rocky relationship with Law and then an affair with married actor Balthazar Getty nevertheless made her the perfect tabloid target, and it seemed to have a negative impact on her career.
"It had become difficult for me to get work I wanted, if I'm really honest...I sabotaged things. I burnt a lot of bridges," she says. "It was really bad. What was going on in my private life was not an easy thing to read about. People don't want to see films with people they don't approve of in them."
As a result, Miller took a much-needed three-year break from the spotlight. "I felt like I had no control over any aspect of my life, professionally or personally. So I deliberately disappeared. I was sick of myself, to be honest, or sick of that perception of me. It all felt so f--king dirty," she shares.
Following her hiatus, Miller definitely started to see things turn around for the better.
Career-wise, she received some of her best notices for her portrayal of Tippi Hedren in the 2012 BBC film The Girl, and she's got three new films scheduled to be released in the coming months.
Her personal life also got quite a boost when she and fiancé Tom Sturridge welcomed daughter Marlowe in July 2012.
"I feel really settled. I have a wonderful life," she says. "I'm up every morning with a little baby. That gives you incredible perspective. It's such a gift. And it's grounding in a way you can't describe. And going back to work is really exciting and fun."
On her relationship with Sturridge, she adds, "He's the perfect balance to my lunacy, which makes him sound really boring but he's not, at all. It's good, it works. It's not easy, of course, but we're a family and I love that."
