Sons of Anarchy Spinoff in the Works at FX?

Sons of Anarchy is the latest series hopping on the TV spinoff train.

The FX series' creator Kurt Sutter has been in talks with the network to develop a prequel series after Sons of Anarchy's seventh and final season, a source confirms to E! News. And Sutter opened up about his idea for the potential spinoff at the Sons of Sandy Relief event in Asbury, N.J., over the weekend.

"I've had discussions with the network about it, and I think they are open to it," he said, according to People. "I think there is something really interesting about the origins of the club. And to do a period piece set in the '60s, post-Vietnam could be kind of cool. I don't think we would dovetail and start right after the series ended, but it's something I'm potentially excited about it."

Our insider tells us Sutter has indeed talked to FX about the idea of continuing the franchise after Sons of Anarchy ends, but the key phrase there is after SOA ends.

That means talks of a spinoff wouldn't really get serious until Sutter finishes telling the Shakespearean tale of Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam).

In the meantime, Sutter is focusing on the seventh and final season of Sons, which recently wrapped production on its sixth season. Back in July, Sutter told fans at Comic-Con that the series would end "in a pool of blood."

And at the Television Critics Association press tour later in the summer, Sutter expanded on that, saying he as "an idea of what the final shot is. And I hold onto it loosely. If that's what it ends up being, that's what it ends up being. For me, I need that marker to go towards and then I'm led to the right place."

He was also quick to rule out that Sons of Anarchy would go beyond seven seasons, but said he's open to adding more episodes to the final season. "Hey, if I go to John [Landgraf] and the studio and say, ‘Hey, I need three more episodes to close out the season, they'll find a way to do it. If I can't fit [the ending] into 13 episodes, there might be some room."

Sons of Anarchy airs Tuesday at 10 p.m. on FX.
