The show, which was delayed 27 minutes due to the football on the East Coast, matched the Fey-hosted season-premiere episode in the demo, but the 30 Rock star raked in more eyes compared to Cyrus (4.7 million).
Miley poked fun at her controversial MTV VMA performance and the government shutdown, and even promised to refrain from doing a certain dance.
"In case anyone was concerned, there will be no twerking tonight. I used to think it was cool, but now that white people are doing it, it seems kind of lame," the 20-year-old said in her opening monologue.
She also performed her latest single "Wrecking Ball" and a soulful, stripped-down rendition of "We Can't Stop."
