The Glee Project, Oxygen's reality competition series that awarded its winners with roles on Glee, will not return for a third season.

"The Glee Project will not be returning to Oxygen, but we are extremely proud of this series which launched the careers of several talented individuals," the network says in a statement. "The show had so much heart and we thank Ryan Murphy and all of the creative talent who helped make the series a critical darling."

Although Glee lost its leading man Cory Monteith tragically this past weekend, a source tells us that the cancellation has nothing to do with his passing, and that the decision not to renew the show was made "several weeks ago." The source cites too-little turnaround time from Glee's late pickup as the main reason The Glee Project was axed.

The reality series also suffered from less-than-impressive ratings, with only 821,000 viewers tuning in for the season-two finale.

The Glee Project was responsible for Damian McGintySamuel Larsen, Blake Jenner and Alex Newell appearing on Glee with recurring or guest spots. Monteith served as a mentor on the reality series, along with Lea Michele, Chris Colfer and Darren Criss.
