Watch! John Mayer Opens Up About His "Tough Time" in New "Shadow Days" Music Video

Ailing vocal cords forced John Mayer to cancel his comeback tour until he recovers. But at least the blues rocker's putting his down time to good use...by going on a road trip.

Mayer struck out for the Wild West, including Utah's famed Monument Valley, for his latest music video for his new single, "Shadow Days," which hit the Web today.

Donning his white cowboy hat, denim jacket and his trusty guitar, the clip finds the 34-year-old singer-songwriter driving in his Jeep around various western U.S. locales, holing up in a seedy motel, hanging out in a diner, snapping pictures and singing to the camera.

"I'm a good man, with a good heart/Had a tough time, got a rough start," Mayer croons. "Now I'm right here, and I'm right now/And I'm open, knowing somehow/That my shadow days are over/My shadow days are over now."

Lets hope so.

While his new album from which the tune is taken, Born and Raised, is set to drop May 22, the musician has been sidelined since early March after informing fans the granuloma on his vocal cords grew back. He's expected to undergo throat surgery and spend several months recovering—what he described as "a very long chemically induced period of silence."

Before that happens however, Mayer is scheduled to speak May 10 about making his new CD in Los Angeles with Grammy Museum Executive Director Bob Santelli. Tickets go on sale to the public April 27 via Ticketmaster, and all proceeds benefit the Grammy Museum.
